Finished Object Friday - Princess Plume

I got this one done this summer when I finally cracked open my Twisted Fiber Arts Evolution skein in July.  The yarn was a gorgeous pink to purple with a lovely reddish tinge in between.  The color was called 12 Princesses after the Grimm's Fairy Tale.

I wanted to make a hat that had some nice work but would show off the color evolution so I picked Plumeable because I liked the little lace pattern but it wouldn't take away from the color changes.

I currently wear the hat in equal rotation with some other hats I have made or have been gifted.  Though the the colors on this one do brighten the dull gray days.

WIP Wednesday - Distracted

So I missed posting last week because I forgot to take pictures and I kinda forgot to take pictures this week too.  I have been distracted lately.  Nothing bad just a combination of nice weather and a busy schedule.

I did splurge and get another manicure on Monday.  My last one chipped way to early for my liking because of all of the dishes and water I was around during the festival.  So I got a sparkly red color.

Anyway, between the nice weather and busy work days, I haven't really gotten much done craft wise, but I did start a hat.

Princess Plume

The yarn is an evolution from Twisted Fiber Arts in 12 Princesses.  I am really pleased with this evolution and this hat has been flying off the needles.  The pattern is Plumeable and is free on Ravelry.  I really liked the sample on the project page and knew I had to make it with my Twisted.
I have started on the decreases and hope to get it finished soon.

Finished Object Friday - Hats Galore

So I sort of went on a hat making binge this past winter.  Alas I didn't really get around to telling the world about them but there is no time like the present right?

So here we go!

Pittsburgh Panthers Hat

P-I-T-T LETS GO PITT!!

I made this hat for as a Christamas Gift for Jenn's Fiance, Ryan.  As a fellow Pitt Grad, I knew I wanted to make him something blue and gold.  He is an insurance appraiser so I knew a nice hat would be the perfect thing for the rest of the cold winter.  

I found this pattern on ravelry because it showed a nice transition between the colors without screaming PITT!  I figured it would work in a work environment.  

The knitting was fairly easy even though I sort of mis-read the pattern and started the colorwork about 2 inches too early.  Oh well, I made it work and I think it turned out well.

As a get well gift from work, I was sent oodles of yarn and two projects to work on.  It was a lot easier to knit and crochet while I recovered from surgery than to read.  I had the attention span of a gnat but stockinette in the round I could do from muscle memory.  Plus it was ever so forgiving when I put it down to nap for a bit.

So as I opened my lovely surprise gift, I knew I had to make this hat ASAP.  The pattern was awesome and taught me how to do a jog-less stripe which was awesome.  I loved this hat and wore most of the winter.

The lovely thing about evolutions is that they progress from one color to another.  This one went from a lovely plum purple color to a nice chocolate brown.  I made this hat with Jenn in mind even though it hasn't gotten to it's recipient.  I was really happy with the pattern and love the swirling purl rib that travels up the hat.  It was deceptively simple with a great result.

WIP Wednesday - Stripes!

Well then, we are back to our regularly scheduled programming.  Hope you all had a good week.

Yesterday I got all sorts of wires crossed.  I thought I had training at the gym (it's tonight) so I left work with plenty of time to get there and change.  As soon as I got to my car, my left contact started to swim around my eye and burn.  Of course I don't have any solution with me or my glasses to rectify the situation.

 I also had a feeling I was missing something and looked in my bag for the gym and realized I forgot sneakers.  So in the 40 minutes until my (supposed) session I stopped at Kohls to get another pair of sneakers and the grocery store to get contact solution and booked it to the gym.

I made it with 10 minutes to spare to change and deal with my contact.  Only to find out that I was a day early for my session. GAH!!!!!!  So I stayed and did some cardio and left.  Unfortunately, my contact was still not cooperating so I took it out.  So I drove home like a pirate with one eye closed.

In other new, things keep flying off the needles but as fast as they come off more get started so here is my crafty update.

Love the Spirals

So I have been moving along on this hat.  You have to love Aran weight yarn because everything just knits up so fast!  I am in a dilema because I passed the point to start decreasing about an inch ago but I want to use up the yarn to get the full effect of the evolution.  So I don't know whether to keep on knitting or just bite the bullet and start the decreases.  Any advise here is welcome!

Back in the Saddle

So after finishing a few things, this was high on the list to get started again.  Unfortunately the reason why this project was in time out was because of some discoloration that occured.  I stupidly left this project exposed to the sun in my car in June.  The heat and the rays changed large sections of the grey to a patina green (that color copper oxidizes to).  So I had to rip out several sections to fix the problem.  Due to the heartbreak that 20 minutes of ripping back stitches that was several nights worth of work, this project went into hibernation.

Now I just want to finish it!  I have so many other things that I want to make and this has langoured enough.  Hopefully this will go faster now that I am back at work on it.

Oh La La!

I made a swatch!

So while there are plenty of project that have been on the needles for a while, a girl just needs something new to be excited about.  After finishing my Shapely Boyfriend Cardigan I have been hankering to make another sweater.  I have a few lots of yarn ready to go but have to wait because I don't want to spend months on something that I can only wear for a week due to my weight loss.
But this cardigan seems pretty forgiving.  It's constructed differently from my Shapely Boyfriend but is still seamless.  I even had most of yarn in my stash but I still needed to order a bit more.

Blue Green and Brown Sweater

In an effort to keep my excitement about the project, I made my swatch to test the yarn, needles, and fabric.  As you can see above the yarn is working beautifully.  There is a nice drape and the color had minimal bleeding in the wash.

Now to dream about my package to arrive so I can cast on.

WIP Wednesday - Err Thursday? #5

Another wonky week.  I took a vacation day on Monday and traveled to Cleveland for work on Wednesday and needless to say I have no idea what day it is.

Aside from not knowing what day it is, I am really sick of winter.  I try not to complain because I chose to bitch about the heat during the summer but spring better get here soon.  We have been getting tastes of nice weather but then it plunges back into the bitter cold and snow.  It's enough to cause anyone to go batty.

In other news, life has been pretty busy.  I have had several appointments with my trainer this month and am really starting to feel it.  Seriously, my legs were like jello after our session on Tuesday.  Plus, I just love the feeling after I leave the gym.  I feel like I can leap tall buildings in a single bound.  Seriously that's worth the effort and pain.

The awesome thing is that I have finished several project but have stalled on taking awesome pictures to memorialize the project.  Perhaps as spring approaches and the sun shines I will be able to get more pics.

While recovering from my Gastric Bypass Surgery, my work got me a get well gift of yarn instead of flowers.  How thoughtful is that?  Anyway, I need to get some things off my needles before I started a new project.  As soon as I finished my color affection, I decided to start this hat. 

The yarn is a beautiful brown and teal in Acadia from The Fibre Company.  This yarn is a lovely merino, alpaca and silk blend and has been a dream to work with.  As of now I am stripe set away from starting the decreases.

I had started this for a Ravellenic 2014 event but didn't finish in time.

While I waited to start the Katahdin, I jumped into this hat as soon as the yarn came in the mail.  I had this project planned for awhile and was just waiting for the mini skeins to arrive in my Twisted Fiber Art post club order.

Super pretty!

I got a skein of Queen (Aran weight) in High Tea from the Fall Club.  The amount is just a smidge short to make a gorgeous hat so I bought 2 mini skeins to ensure I had enough yardage.  I like my hats to be big and slouchy.  Smaller hats ruin my hair and we can't have that now can we?

Anyway, I haven't started the pattern yet but the hat has a spiral in it so it swirls to the crown like a hurricane.  Can't wait to show my progress.

WIP Wednesday - Merry and Bright

What a week!  Pitt is technically in Finals but I just have a paper to submit before Friday at 6 pm.  The paper is complete just with my group for a final review.  That out of the way, I am back to my regular schedule and it's a little weird.  I really have lost track of what day it is because I'm not leaving for class on Monday and Wednesday.

I do want to apologize for not responding to comments this past week.  Something is wrong with the embedded comments and I cannot reply.  When I started my blog I promised myself that I would respond to every comment.  I really appreciate your insights and reminds me that there are people out there reading this.  :)

In another bit of news, this one's a big one.  I am having Gastric Bypass Surgery on December 24th.  I have kept things quiet while I was prepping and telling friends and family.  Now that it's so close I am excited but anxious about how rapidly it's approaching.  Please keep me in your thoughts.  With that said, I can't wait to post pictures of my weight loss.  I have lost 25 lbs in 2 months in preparation for the surgery.  My doctor wants me to lose 30 total and it's been a bit of a challenge.

Rigging Up the Color Affection

This is coming along nicely.  I have 8 of 12 stripes complete with only 4 more to go.  This section has flown.  I am also at the point where the stripes are mixing colors.  I like it but it took a while to get used too.  Its a little more muddled than the solid color stripes.  Anyway, can't wait to get it done.

Pittsburgh Panther Hat

This is a hat for my bestie's guy.  Like me he went to the University of Pittsburgh so I decided to make a Blue and Gold hat.  I looked for color work that was Pitt inspired but couldn't find anything so I settled on this pattern.  It was originally Steeler Black and Gold but the blue looks so nice. Since it lacks any logo, it can be worn anywhere.  I made a boo boo and misread the instructions. You're supposed to knit plain for 4 inches before the pattern and i knit 2 inches.  Sadly this is a but of a blessing because I was low on the navy blue so the hat will be predominately gold.

WIP Wednesday - The Holidays Are Coming!

I feel like there should be screaming and pandemonium, when I read this weeks title.  This time next week I will be scrambling to get the ingredients for the side dish I am taking to Thanksgiving dinner.  But for now I am in gift making and buying mode.  I am in two holiday swaps.  One if for our local knitting group and I am just about done with that one.  Muwahahaha!  I need to order something but other than that I am done!  Woot.  The other one is for Nerd Wars.  I am well on my way with progress for that one so yippy.

As far as other shopping goes, I think I know what I will get everyone but haven't had an opportunity to shop.  I usually wait until after Thankgiving to do my shopping but because it's so late this year I may have to start this weekend.  There are only 3 weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Aieeeeee!

I have to say the picture above makes me think of something that was scandalous in Georgian England.  Seriously it's just a bit of shoulder and arm.  How racy :)  Perhaps I need to lay off the historical romances...

Anyway due to swap projects in the works I put this aside the later part of the week.  I cast off the first sleeve last week and got a lot done on Thursday but didn't manage to finish it like I hoped.  I should be able to finish it tonight and get started on the button band.

Mint Ginger Ale Soda

A Sneak Peek!

So I mentioned that I started and finished this guy between last week's post.  I love making hats, so quick and satisfying.  The pattern is called Cherry Soda/Orange Soda and while I call all fizzy drinks pop, I needed a green soda to name my hat.  Ginger ale came to mind but not just any ginger ale but Mint Ginger Ale.  I love this stuff, it totally reminds me of the holidays because that's when its available.  Apparently it's a Pittsburgh thing but this is my drink of choice around Christmas time.  Anyway the pop is Green!  So of course I had to name my project after this favorite!

Little mitts!

So I tried to start these two at a time but that was an epic fail.  I think I got the needles twisted so I just pulled them off and will make them one at a time.  I will try again at some point.  Anyway so a friend made these for her last swap and they turned out really nice so I wanted to give them a try.

I originally picked a different yarn but it had a color that my swap partner didn't like.  Thankfully I was still on the hat so I swapped out the mitt yarn. One complaint with the teal is that it's kinda dark and it bugs my eyes.  I think it will be easier now that I can see my stitches versus just the cast on row.

Finished Object Friday - Ravenclaw Beanie

Hello again!  Well it appears as though the world did not come to an end today.  Somewhere in Asia, it already December 22nd so I think we are good.  Anyway, even though my birthday is right around the Summer Solstice, the Winter Solstice is my favorite.  We are going through the shortest day of the year but tomorrow is a little bit longer, and the next day is longer.   How can you not be encouraged by a little more sunshine each day until June.

Anyway, I am dreadfully behind on Christmas.  Shopping is far from done, some baking is done, some decorating is done.  But all in all I have a busy couple of days ahead of me until Christmas and then it's off to Anaheim.

Well enough blather for one Friday, let's get down to yarn.

If you will remember, I made the Gryffindor Set for my Boss' daughter as a going away present for college.  Granted she was home on break when she got it but it was still warm out.  As a result, of my efforts I began to feel bad about not making anything for my Boss' son so when she approached him about it, he was super excited to get a Ravenclaw Beanie.

I love making hats because they are instant gratification when it comes to projects.  Round and round and some decreases and voila your done.  I am really pleased with this hat because it looks nice and masculine but is totally Harry Potter through and through.

While the move made the accessories in Blue and Grey, I chose to go book style and use a coppery/bronze color to accent the blue.  The picture is showing the color as more Royal but it's navy.

I already passes this along to my boss and he will get it on Christmas.  I hope he likes it!

There is a huge part of me that wants to whip up a Hufflepuff hat for myself.  I have enough Black and Gold. Keep your eyes peeled for another hat from this pattern.

Hello all, I admit to being a bit rushed today due to finishing my research paper for my class.  While I did set the final due date for the class, I shouldn't request an extension right? Yesterday was productive but I had hoped to finish the whole thing.  Anyway I have the intro, background, and methodology done so now to just write the results....that I need to complete. Sigh.

ETA: at 7:45 PM it is done and submitted!  Happy Day!

Anyway, I should have worked on it most of the weekend but surprise I procrastinated.  Check out what I got accomplished instead of my paper. : /

Well, I got as may ends weaved in as I could and then I started the peach and pink square.  There isn't too much to see but I am glad to have gotten those ends weaved in.

This has been such an easy and mindless knit that I really have gotten pretty far on it.  I have a few rows left then I can start the decreases.  Does anyone else find hat decreases fun?  I think because your nearing the end and it's a visible change after the rows of stockinette.

WIP Wednesday - One Hundred

Welcome to my 100th post!  Can you believe that I have posted here 100 times?  I really can't but then again, this year has passed by so quickly.  I am not going to do anything special with this post but I do plan on celebrating my Blogiversary on January 6th!  So stay tuned for awesome celebratory games and prizes!

In other news, I went to the auto body shop to get the damage appraised from my accident and they were able to clean it and buff it so that I may not need to get it fixed.  Still deciding of course but it's nice to have options.

My paper is still sitting in draft form but I have to get a move on and finish it this week and weekend.  I even took off of work on the 11th to make sure I have ample time to finish it before I submit it on 12/12.  Ah the joys of Grad School.  

So now onto the yarny goodness.

I have been busy weaving in ends on this project.  I had some holiday knitting and so this one is on the back burner until that's done.  I hope to get the rest of the holiday projects done this week (you know while I am procrastinating on my paper) and then get back to this.

I wanted to work on something different from the garter stitches of the blanket so I pulled out my sweater.  I pulled the stitches off for the arms and cast on for under the arms.  I may have cast on a few to many (okay 50 but who's counting) so I am working on decreasing those to a more manageable amount. 

But I am so excited about this project.  It's nice to be able to put it on as I go and it's no longer an orange blob on my couch for pictures.

Ravenclaw Beanie

Next hat is in lighter colors!

So after I made all of the Gryffindor winter knits for my boss' daugher, I felt a little bad about not making something for her son.  So, he decided he wanted a Ravenclaw hat and I may make a set of wristlets too if I have enough yarn. 

I love this pattern as it's a no brainer.  Cast on, work the ribbing, work in stockinette until it's 5 inches then do decreases.  Easy peasy!  But navy is just as hard on the eyes at night as black so there is some challenge there.  

I am more of a book purist and chose the accent color to be a bronze yarn versus the grey used in the movies.  Hope he like it!

I wanted to show all of you the progress on my crochet shawl.  I know most of the pictures just have the swatch I did but I have been doing a row here or there when the mood strikes.  Isn't the yarn just gorgeous?

Well, that's about it for this week.  I need to get a move on with the Owl Fingerless Mittens as the gift exchange is on Saturday!  Go Go Gadget knitting needles!

Finished Object Friday - Gryffindor Knit Set

Gryffindor,Where dwell the brave at heart!

My fellow knitters, I should have known.  Really I suspected but I was naive to the amount of Gryffindor spirit required to embark on a journey of House Color Coordinates.  I honestly thought if I worked on it a lot it wouldn't take too long.  I started at the beginning of March and just this week finished the entire set of Gryffindor items.

I made the scarf, hat and wristlets in stunning Burgundy and Gold for the daughter of my boss.  She was graduating high school and going to college and I initially thought to make the items in her new school colors but she wanted Gryffindor Burgandy and Gold.  I wanted to make these items as a reminder of a new adventure in college and to have a piece of Harry by her as she faces the triumphs and challenges of this new experience.  Needless to say, she is already at college but winter is coming and these are just in time.

As an avid Potter fan, I had always wanted to make a set but I myself identify with Hufflepuff.  I am honest and hard working and just want everyone to get along.  The Hufflepuff colors are black and gold and here in Western PA, those colors mean a different thing entirely (Let's Go Steelers!).  I wanted to make something iconic from the films and so making the Gryffindor Set for someone as deserving as Katherine was a treat.

So here are the different parts of the set,

The Gryffindor Scarf!

The scarf (and subsequent pieces) is modeled after the stripe pattern in the later movies particularly Movies 3 and 4.  I think it has a very adult feel and would work well for a college student.each section has 29 rows of K1P1 ribbing in burgundy followed by an 8 row stripe pattern. There are 14 sets of stripes and 15 burgundy sections which equal 547 rows of knitting.  To go further, each row has 60 stitches, totaling 32,820 stitches.  That all results in over 6 ft of yarn!

This was a beast in fact, knitting the end of it during August was a bit uncomfortable because the hot summer and the warm wool blend.  I got it down that in one knit night on Thursday (round 3 hours) I could get one section complete.

Fringe!

I made the fringe a combination of both the burgundy and the gold because I felt that it really set off the scarf nicely.

The Gryffindor Hat!

I really liked working on this hat (perhaps because it only took 2 weeks).  In the entire set, this was by far the most mindless.  Perhaps it was due to past experience with knitting hats or just the nice round after round of stockinette.  Unlike the scarf where I kept meticulous notes of rows and can then calculate the stitch count, this was more of a wingged effort.

I cast on 128 stitches which was more stitches that it called for to make a large and slouchy hat.  I worked the ribbing for 10 rows and then in stockinette until the body was 6 inches from the cast on edge.  I made the same 8 stitch patter and then did the written decreases after 8 inches from the CO edge.

The result is a lovely but modern version of the beanie from the movies.

The Gryffindor Wristlets!

The pattern was actually mittens but in the age of smart phones and touch screens, this would not be a practical item for our college bound grad.  Instead I modified the pattern and made fingerless wristlets.  I am so please with this pattern that it might be my go to for any fingerless wristlets going forward without the Harry Potter Pattern.

I have to say that when I initially looked at the pattern the thought of dropping off stitches onto scrap yarn and then picking them up again was a bit daunting but I think after socks nothing is unusual anymore.

I did however make a boo boo.  I made the first attempt but placed the increases on the thumb seam instead of the crease between the pointer finger and thumb.  When I went to make the second wristlet, I realized my mistake far to late.  I finished the wristlet and then cast on another one.  These in total took about 4 evenings of work.  Not bad considering the 45 hours needed for the scarf.

I plan on writing up my modifications on the rav page if you are interested in seeing where I deviated.

So there you have it.  My completed set, I am please as punch at the result and my boss (AKA Katherine's Mom) is so pleased with the result.  I am sure she will be too...hopefully I will get a picture!

WIP Wednesday - Rockets Red Glare!

Happy Fourth of July! I love the Fourth, it reminds me of the picnics at my Great Grandmother's House.  My Aunt would chase me around with Super Soakers and there would a ton of food.  Granted we don't know how to have any sort of gather without a ton of food.  Has anyone ever noticed that the American holidays (July 4th and Thanksgiving) are all about the food?

Anyway this year is very subdued, since the holiday is in the middle of the week.   I am not going home for a picnic this year, instead I was supposed to go to the Pirates game and then stick around the city for the fireworks.  Alas, my plans have been thwarted by a migraine.

So we will see what the rest of the day brings.

As a bit of an update, I had a lovely birthday and it wasn't as bad as I worried about.

Now onto the yarny goodness that is WIP Wednesday!

Diagonal Lace Socks

These have gone to the back burner for the time being. I was working on them for Nerd Wars and the first month ended and I only got one sock done.

White Centered Granny Square Blanket
Well these have been a lovely diversion WIP and I had to try out all of the colors this week.  I just wanted to see how everything played together.  I do love these colors.

Don't they all look great!  I am so happy the colors worked out!

I also was able to measure the finished square with the white borders to get estimates for the finished blanket.  Now that I know the blocks are about 5" x 5" I realized that I needed more yarn so I bought more yarn.

Green Lantern Square

I started the next square in my Big Bang Theory/Justice League Series.  I cast on in late June but ripped it out because something didn't work right.  I then recast on in July and now it qualifies for Nerd Wars.  I am so happy with how it is turning out.  Check out how it's turning out!

I should get this done this afternoon.  I am so pleased by how the pattern is working up.  I will share when everything is done.  The Flash is next!

Gryffindor Beanie

This is another one I started but ripped out and can use for Nerd Wars.  This is to go with the Gryffindor Scarf that I am working on.  As soon as the Green Lantern square is done this is next on the list.

Crafting Balance - 3KCBWDAY7

Welcome again to the Knit and Crochet Blog Week, Day 7!  As we round out the last day of the Knit and Crochet blog week, we are asked to talk about our crafting balance.

What an interesting topic to round out the week.  In general, I am a newbie to the crafts. I re-learned to crochet in 2008 and have completed several projects.

Scarves, Squares, Blankets and Amigurumi!

But last summer I was enchanted by a knit hat and really haven't looked back.

When I started this hat, I didn't know how to cast on, knit, purl, knit in the round or do color work but the challenge of knitting was something that forced me to keep learning.

Since that time I have made another hat, started half a dozen other projects, finished socks....

Cables...

You know as I look at my WIPs and things that I have planned, I have turned into more of a knitter than a crocheter. I love both equally but it really depends on what projects capture my attention.

I really love both, I feel a connection to my great-grandmother when I crochet. I feel challenged when I work on knitting crazy socks and garments. I know I will balance both as need as I craft into my future.
