WIP Wednesday - Final Countdown

The end of the month is approaching.  Fall is definitely in the air and all I want to do is bake.  Alas, I haven't had the time so hopefully there will be yummy pies to show in October.

As an update from last week, I did finish my paper though it put me behind on some work that didn't get caught up until Friday.  I ended up staying late on Friday to get everything done.  While it was exhausting, it was nice to walk in to work on Monday and be on track.

This weekend is my friend Becky's wedding.  Hopefully I should have some pretty pictures of my dress and the festivities.

White Centered Granny Blanket

Just one more section to go
So Saturday I picked up more yarn and got to work seaming section 5.  After completing that section, I realized I would have some extra squares and I added another column to the blanket.  So 12 more squares were bordered and stitched together and then Monday night I added section 5 and the column to my blanket.

I then tried to finish the last section but stalled and went to bed.  I hope to finish the last section tonight and finish the seaming.  While the main portions of the blanket will be complete, I still have the border to do.  I am thinking something lacy and scalloped.  Even though I am close to the end of the blanket and there is still a lot to do but I am on track to finish this blanket in September.

One thing to note is that this blanket will be heavy and warm.  I was shocked while moving it around to seam the last section how heavy it was. But then again I shouldn't be surprised because I have used 5 kg of yarn so far.

Cherry Sundry

An update!
This has been my go to knitting project when I need a break from the blanket.  So far I have used 48 grams of yarn and have about 30 more grams to use before I can start the hounds-tooth section.  Overall this pattern is nice and easy and will grow to about 100 stitches before I need to switch.

Ruby Red!

The red is such a lovely and deep color.  I love semi-solid yarn.  It always has such depth and character that solid color yarn doesn't have.

So that's all for this week.  Hopefully next week I will have an awesome finished object to share.

Movie Madness Monday 12

Welcome back.  This is a weekly meme where bloggers can share their thoughts on movies.  Any movie review is welcome including, new releases, old favorites or new found favorites.

What I am Reviewing:

Lars and the Real Girl

image from imdb.com
Based on the synopsis, this movie seems silly and a farce but the seriousness of the topic made this movie engaging and thought provoking.  Lars anti-social and delusional and develops and unconventional relationship with a life size doll.

Rather than treat him as an outcast and isolate him, the community rallies around his love for the doll and incorporates her into the community.  Seriously, she has a busier social calendar than I do.

I admit that I was interested in this movie mainly due to Ryan Gosling.  During the filming of this movie, he learned to knit from some of the elderly ladies in the cast.  How adorable is that?  Aside from that, I was pleasantly surprised at how much this movie resounded with me.  Sometimes a story is better than it's cover and title.  I hope you check this movie out.

What I have reviewed:

Rise of the Guardians
Star Trek: Into Darkness
We're the Millers

WIP Wednesday - Stalled

Lately, I feel like I can't catch up.  The hardest part of September is getting back into the swing of school and work.  I lazed around during the summer only jump right back into a hectic schedule in the fall.

So today this will probably be pretty short because it's 10 AM and I still have a 2 page paper to write by 6 pm for class.  I have such good intentions not to procrastinate but alas I did.

In other news, I have been moved back to my old group at work.  Basically, the original move was the right decision but it was the wrong time.  It will be revisited after the holidays.

White Centered Granny Blanket

Another set of square ready to join!

Holy Cow!  I looked back at my last WIP Wednesday post and realized I haven't made much progress on anything in 2 weeks.  I realized with writing this blog that I have big spurts of productivity with some downtime in between.

On this project, I got all of the colored squares done but still needed to do the borders and weave in the ends.  So for the past two weeks, I have been working on the next set of 20 squares.  I broke this blanket into sections to make it seem less daunting and have had success so far.  As I finished bordering the 20th square for this section, I ran out of yarn.  I managed to find just enough ends to finish off the square but it was close.  So now to put the section together, I need to run to the knitting store and get the yarn I have on order.  I hope 10 balls of the white will be enough to edge 30 more squares and then the border.

Other Projects

Cherry Sundry has been my go to knitting project.  I have the first part of the pattern memorized and I basically repeat the pattern until I use 2/3 of the yarn by weight.  So while progress has been made, the pictures just look like a growing triangle.

Hue Shift Afghan my plan is as soon as I finish this Granny Blanket to get back to working on this.  Not only do I have two more sections to knit but I have to do some blocking to fix my gauge issue.  My gauge tightened during the second section and I am 0.5 inches off on each side of the block.  I did manage to order the Navy yarn I need for the border along with 15 other colors...oops :)

Diagonal Lace Socks I don't know if you recall these yellow socks I was working on.  In an effort just to get stuff done, I brought these out and started to work on the second sock.

WIP Wednesday - Err Thursday? #3

What a crazy week!  I keep forgetting what day of the week it is and I was so certain yesterday was Tuesday.  Hence the delay in writing here.  Monday was the Labor Day holiday and it just completely threw my week off.  Tuesday was generally okay but yesterday I had one hell of a day.

First I found out that I am switching groups at work.  My day to day isn't changing but I basically got re-aligned to a new manager based on that work.  It's not a bad thing just different and that sort of leaves me unsettled.  Then I realized I left my debit card at home, so when I left for my class I had to double back to my apartment and get it.  In doing this trip I ended up being 30 minutes late for my class.  Thankfully my professor is reasonable and didn't get mad.

On top of that, when I did briefly realize yesterday was Wednesday I was a bit to swamped to get to the blog.  Similarly I just got a moment today to update.

So here we are in September and one of my favorite months.  I love September and October.  This is my favorite weather of the year.  I love the cool crisp breezes that flow through the area.  I love watching the green leaves turn their dazzling fall colors.  I love apples, pumpkins and baked appley and pumkiny things!  This is the season of pies, stews, and hearty soups. I even love the cool rainy days when I can lounge around with a cup of hot tea and a book or knitting.  I love the festivals and events.

I do fear that this month is going to go by so quickly because it's a busy month as well.  Hopefully, I can combat that speed with a lot of pictures and blogging to remember my favorite time of the year.

White Centered Granny Blanket

And I have 80 squares complete
So I finished another section of my blanket.  I am so happy with how it is turning out (even with the different off-whites).  This is now at the stage where I can start to cover up with it while I am working on adding rows.  The blanket feels so heavy and warm and will look so lovely on the back of my couch.

All scrunched up!
I did start the next batch of squares.  Just 40 more squares to add.  I will have several extra and  I need to decide what to do with them.  I can add a 13th row or I can put them together for some matching pillows.  I think it will depend on how much I feel like doing when I get this all done.

Pretty!
I also did write up a post on how I created the randomness in my blanket using Excel.  Check it out and I hope it helps you to take the pressure of making a randomized design.

Winter's Coming

Pretty Snowflakes
Before the weather got cooler this week, we had one last blast of heat and humidity.  In the haze I thought making a snowflake would trick my brain into cooling down.  I don't know if it worked but I did enjoy this hexagon.  I think I am going to use this as a swatch for a fall dissertation from Nerd Wars.  I think it's a good enough project that I can get done with in 3 months in time for snow and Christmas.

In other projects things are progressing but nothing really to show.  Anyway, that was my week.  Hope yours is going well.

Movie Madness Monday 9

Welcome back.  This is a weekly meme where bloggers can share their thoughts on movies.  Any movie review is welcome including, new releases, old favorites or new found favorites.

What I am reviewing:

Sorry for the delay, I forgot about Labor Day yesterday....Here is your movie madness Monday on Tuesday.

Rise of the Guardians

image from imdb.com

I am continuing my love of Chris Pine with Rise of the Guardians.  He lends his voice to the main character, Jack Frost.  The story is an off shoot of the Guardians of Childhood book series by William Joyce.  This series of books describe how the Sandman, Easter Bunny, ToothFairy and Santa Claus all protect the hopes, dreams and wonder of the world's children.

The main antagonist in the books and the movie is Pitch Black.  He is the incarnation of nightmares and bad dreams, aka the boogeyman.  The only way to combat this dark force is with the help of rebellious spirit of Jack Frost.

This movie was full of beautiful scenery and gorgeous CGI.  I loved the spin on these characters from your traditional holiday heroes to key pieces to help children maintain childhood innocence for as long as possible.

This movie made me laugh and had me on the edge of my seat.  I would definitely recommend adding this movie to your holiday playlist.

2013 - August Recap

Whew, my August sort of blended into the beginning of September and I forgot to post a recap.  Looking back I got a lot of progress done on my two blankets (Hue Shift Blanket and White Centered Granny) and started two shawls (Cherry Sundry and Happy Street).
